Strange Guts

Strange Guts those men have –
To be able to kill men;
who they don’t even know;
who may be as innocent as they are,
But just on the other side of the fence.

Strange Guts in soldiers –
who are willing to kill themselves,
Just to satisfy a dictator’s greed.
Leaving one’s family behind;
to kill a member of another’s.

Strange guts of the family –
To be able to look the soldier in the eye
And to hear him say that he knows
that he will come back one day;
And pretend to believe each word of it.

Strange guts of people –
To be proud of waging wars
To fight men on the other side
Of crooked man-made borders
that divide us into different people.

Strange guts of soldiers –
To deny a man his right to live
So that some others may keep theirs
And maybe put it to a lesser use
Than what was being done by the dead.

Strange guts in you, the reader –
to read this poem whole.
And maybe feel a little hollow inside;
And forget about it the next day
As if you never read it.

Strange guts those men have –
To be able to kill men
who they don’t even know
who may be as innocent as they are
But just on the other side of the fence.
